Healthy diet foods: They taste better than you think!

What exactly are healthy diet foods? You probably know from the holidays by how you feel after a big meal in that it wouldn’t be healthy eating that way all the time.

Although, we don’t hear too much about a high protein diet not being healthy, (causing kidney problems, rheumatoid arthritis and gout) we do hear that too much fat, sugar and salt does not promote better health.

We also have heard over and over again through the mainstream media that a higher fiber diet is beneficial. We also know that we need our vitamins and minerals in sufficient quantities to remain healthy and prevent disease. We have learned that certain foods are health destroyers and others health enablers.

Through my own research, I found the seventh day Adventists in Loma Linda on average, tend to be healthier and live longer than most Americans. This may partly be true due to their vegetarian diet [1 seventh day Adventists].

It appears it isn’t solely the food they eat contributing to superior health and longer life. It likely is also lifestyle. Additionally, there are centenarians in other countries who remain active and are healthy eating similarly to the Adventists.

There appears to be a common denominator to improved health and longest life…

  • Drinking adequate amounts of pure water
  • Breathing fresh air and getting enough sun
  • Being active physically
  • Avoiding tobacco, alcohol and other drugs
  • Eating a whole food plant based diet which contains (preferably organic) legumes, whole grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables
  • Taking vitamin B12 (especially if you are over 50)
  • Limiting or excluding processed and refined food
  • No refined oils like olive oil, vegetable and canola, etc.
  • No meat or animal products like dairy and eggs, etc.
  • Limiting sugar and salt

To conclude, it seems lifestyle contributes greatly to ones own happiness and health. Family and friends are the essential health promoting ingredient to daily life as well as plant based whole food. Like the old saying goes: ‘no man is an island’ and ‘you are what we eat’.
