Longevity: Weight loss and better health eating plant based whole food

If we are not sick and in pain, I think anyone would agree to live forever. I have always been interested in the ‘secrets to health and longevity’. When I was young, I always wanted to live to become a centenarian.

Most aren’t lucky enough to attain that age, yet on this earth there exist places within countries where inhabitants live to a hundred and beyond.

Here in southern California where I live, a community of seventh day Adventists who reside in Loma Linda are known to live an average of ten years longer. Why? One reason is they eat healthier. Did you know that a diet of fast food and snacks is not healthy? Unfortunately, that’s how most of us eat.

If we change our eating habits, I believe most of us can increase our chances of living longer. The longevity answer is not just good genes. Those who live longest usually don’t drink, smoke and use drugs.

Those who are health conscious, eat largely fruits and vegetables. This means more nutrient rich food, including fiber. Did you know the American diet is low in fiber?

“The recommended intake for total fiber for adults 50 years and younger is set at 38 grams for men and 25 grams for women, while for men and women over 50 it is 30 and 21 grams per day, respectively, due to decreased food consumption” [1 National academies].

There is 8.0 grams of fiber in a cup of raspberries, pinto beans has 11.0 grams and brown rice 4.0 grams. Three square meals of plant based whole food should provide superior nutrition and more than adequate fiber.

I think the secret to health and long life is not as complex as it might seem. Here’s my take on it to increase our lifespan…

  • Save some free time for yourself to meditate upon spiritual things and be with family
  • Find a career you love and look forward to doing everyday
  • Keep your weight down by knowing what your BMI should be
  • Stay active and/or exercise moderately
  • Have friends who share common interests
  • Pursue hobbies
  • Make sure you eat enough fruits, vegetables, brown rice, beans (maybe grow your own broccoli sprouts!) and eat a few nuts like walnuts
  • Find purpose and a mission in life and help others when the opportunity presents itself
  • If you just have to eat meat, don’t eat much. Use a small amount as a condiment flavoring your food
  • Exclude sugar, salt, processed foods and refined oils
  • Make sure you eat enough during the day (there is no portion control eating plant based whole foods)
  • Drink adequate filtered water
  • Get out into the sun every day
  • Breathe fresh air
