Why Lower Protein Diets are Better

We want to protect our organs. What foods we eat may slow their function even to the point they cease working.

Eating some things in moderation can benefit us as well as not eating certain things at all. It has been proven too much protein can harm our kidneys.

Additionally, everyone knows drinking alcohol is not a healthful drink and potentially bad for our liver. As far as eating the right protein goes, there is the question: What is the right protein to eat?

‘Adults in the 50 to 65 group who reported a high protein intake had a 75% increase in overall mortality and were 4 times more likely to die from cancer during the following 18 years than those in the low protein group. The moderate-protein diet was associated with a 3-fold increase in cancer mortality compared to the low-protein diet [1 nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/protein-consumption-linked-longevity]’.

There is much disagreement about this. Through my own research I have discovered plant-based protein is what we should be eating and is superior to animal products. Yet, proteins of soy and grains may be a problem for some of us.

I don’t eat meat because I don’t want to bring harm to our environment especially to the animals themselves. Of course, then there’s the holidays and birthdays. How do we tell grandma we don’t eat turkey anymore?

All fruits and vegetables have protein in lower amounts than soy and legumes. You don’t have to think about it, you just have to eat the apple, beans, the seeds and nuts of which will most likely meet your RDA (recommended daily allowance) in protein.

Grains, like brown rice and others have ample protein. Yet, you can see that pigs, cows and horses do quite well eating all kinds of grains. But, take a quick look at their big stomachs! We, on the other hand don’t have a nutritional requirement for grain. There are other choices more nutritious.

Apes, like chimps do well on fruits and vegetables. We do too once we have decided to eat more of them. Apes eat leaves. Our leaves are leaves of lettuce. Feed apes our standard American diet and they will sicken and die.

Keeping your daily protein intake under 10% may help you avoid an increased risk of heart or cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.
