A Technique For Stopping Destructive Eating And Drinking Habits

We all have self destructive bad habits we’d like to get rid of or have disappear. But, making them go away may take a little work, yet maybe not quite as much as you might think. You might want to give up drinking coffee because it makes you feel too jittery or you also may be drinking too much alcohol. Maybe, you are a hamburger and french fry lover somehow knowing you must change your diet ‘before it’s too late’.

What I do to stop such poor habits is to say to myself that ‘I remember when I used to drink alcohol and coffee’. Of course, you can do this same technique for any food like junk and snack food or pizza, etc..

Or, if you want to cut down and not cut it all out because you don’t feel ready, you could say ‘I remember when I began drinking only one drink at night or one cup of coffee every day’. It makes me wonder if there is such a thing as ‘food addiction…’? Believe me, I still do crave all those unhealthy foods! The difference now is that I simply don’t eat them, anymore (except on holidays and birthdays. Sorry, I lied.)

We propose that specific foods, especially those that are rich in fat and/or sugar, are capable of promoting “addiction”-like behavior and neuronal change under certain conditions. That is, these foods, although highly palatable, are not addictive per se but become so following a restriction/binge pattern of consumption. Such consummatory patterns have been associated with increased risk for comorbid conditions such as obesity, early weight gain, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse as well as with relapse and treatment challenges [1].

Believe it or not, it works. ‘Talking to yourself’ using affirmations costs you nothing, so why not give it a try? I believe everything our life has become is due to how we think. How we think can make us feel positive or sad.

In conclusion, positive thoughts can improve our health in general. Many things we’d like to change about ourselves we can by saying ‘I remember when I used to do so and so and this and that’. It implies that we don’t do it anymore. And, that can be a good thing that keeps us healthy, trim and lengthens our lives.

“Here’s a good one I use… ‘I have all the money I need to buy anything I want…'”
